smoking has been banned in the fed system for a couple of years now. all it has done is raise the price of tobacco. the supply never really dropped. so when it's being smuggled in by family, or STAFF, realize that they will be bringing in DRUGS with it as well. all this will do, is to create new problems!

what is it with this state and smoking? they gladly took the settlement money from the cig industry, yet gave back not one penny to a smoker that wants to quit...that money is long gone without a free patch, or gum to anyone. let them smoke.

Hey, Keeper - why don't you keep the caps UNlocked because it's annoying, and you aren't proving a point. Basically, you are making a bold assumption about someone you know nothing about. You don't know what rights the man you refer to had. Also, the government shouldn't have the right to decide what's best for each individual (e.g. smoking ban). If you're going to say where and when smoking is allowed, cigarettes should just be banned.

What about the casino workers who have to deal with second hand smoke?Do we now hold the state liable to pick up the tab for their health care?Lets hold our elected officials responsible for their actions!

i hope america is happy once you let the government take away one right all the rest are soon to follow. but hey it is what it is. give a an life in a cage without women and even wihout a cigarette hey i hope the guards enjoy flesh wounds because i see alot of them in their future
Flag for moderationSaturday, May 10 at 3:29 PM what rights? wrote ...
Most of those in prison did something to give away their rights. The Bently men took a life and you are worried about them having to give up cig??? They should be gassed for what they did to that little girl. Giving up cigs is the least they need to worry about. Besides, for the person who said smokers don't cause non-smokers any more money, you must not be paying health ins. or you are not being honest about your premiums because if you have a smoker living with you, your premiums are higher

I am shocked that nobody cared about the Correctional Officer that has to work in the prison but doesn't smoke. What about them? They pay for their health care and now they can work in a heathier enviorment. Could for them. Also the story said there prisons are already smoke free. When did these prisons have thier supposed riots. I missed the news story on that. Smoking is a luxtury that should be taken away when you go to prison.

This is a good thing - what about all the NON-smoking prisoners who are forced to live in a smoke-filled environment? They could leave prison with permanent lung damage. I don't care what you people think, prisoners are PEOPLE not ANIMALS.

You people are so ignorant. Prisoners have it easy, huh? YOU EVER BEEN THERE? I would LOVE to see you stuck there for several years, THEN come out and say it's a LUXURY. Time stops - your life stops - everything you knew STOPS. Yes, you're paying for your crime, and it's hell in there. You people have no clue. IT IS HELL. Or, do you LIKE to be assaulted, raped, and tormented by the shrinks who are supposed to "HELP" you? You people make me sick.

What is this world coming to?! Next thing you know they'll put a stop to conjugal visits and take away the bars of soap from the shower rooms so there'll be nothing to drop on the floor! Waterboarding in Gitmo has NOTHING on Iowa slammers!

yeah a rough couple weeks is right better lock down the prisons for a couple weeks to prevent rioting.

Wow I didn't realize how good prisoners have it! Free food, shelter, clothes, and tv. They don't have to pay for gas, a car, insurance, health care. No dead end min. wage job to go to everyday or housing foreclosures to worry about. No more bills to pay? No more high interest student loans to pay back? Who else wants to rob a bank, travel the world a little and then turn themselves in and "retire"?! lol! All this time the answer has been right in front of us!lol!

Prison isn't a resort; it's prison. The people there broke the law & deserve to be where they are. Cigarettes are not a right, they are a privilege and I don't understand why they weren't banned years ago. I think the county jails are already smoke free. If the prisoners don't like it, perhaps when they get out, they'll elect not to return. Prison is not a place where people should be comfortable. Have a nice day.

hey wait a minute, wasn't the cigarette settlement against the tobacco company s for the smokers extra health care cost?? lol
Flag for moderationFriday, May 9 at 1:13 PM why not? wrote ...
why do non smokers always think they are paying for health care or insurance with their little taxes. 90 cents on the dollar of YOUR money is paying too kill Iraq's and steal their oil. Insurance companies should be in prison price this country out of business.

Maybe Quix@11:14 is on to something, letting prisoners smoke themselves to an early grave to save us money, but not all prisoners are in for life. I'm worried about the direction these laws are going in general. Using "health care costs" to justify regulating personal habits will lead to lead to all of us being told what to eat, when to sleep, what hobbies to have, what protective gear must be worn... taken to the extreme, we'll all be forced into "concentrated safety camps" for our own good.

In the long run, this should make prisoners CALMER because nicotine is a stimulant, not a depressant. This will give criminally-inclined persons one more incentive to behave themselves so they can stay out of prison. Now that we'll have fewer prisoners with asthma, emphysema, and other respiratory problems, we'll save money and can even put more of them to work doing something productive - like repairing these roads!

i can't believe they let them smoke in Prison! i wouldn't want to be a guard
Flag for moderationFriday, May 9 at 11:49 AM Anonymous wrote ...
I say let them smoke, but only outside. As for my tax money paying for their health care, I dont think so. Smoke at your own risk. I think we have way to many people in prisons anyway. Prison system needs a serious reform. Non violent people do not belong in prison. They deserve punishment, but I don't think prison is the answer.
Flag for moderationFriday, May 9 at 11:40 AM jahanthahum wrote ...
Maybe we should just make them illegal because their (cigs) raising everyones healthcare. This is just going to lead to more violence in the prisons, i'm glad I dont work there.

didn't you know they have rights? they will claim that its unconstitutional, pleeeez they lost their rights when they broke the law and were imprisoned. they get over it just like the rest of the state when it goes into effect.

For those of you boo-hooing for the poor old prisoners -let me get you a Kleenex. Don't break the law. It's pretty simple.
Flag for moderationFriday, May 9 at 11:27 AM Wow wrote ...
Well all of the people out of prison had to face it so why not them. We pay high prices for insurance so I say why should they add to it when they didn't want to live right in the first place. Take the TV too.
Flag for moderationFriday, May 9 at 11:14 AM quix wrote ...
Since we do not pay for their cigerettes I don't care if they smoke. And for the record smokers do not cost more in health care. Over the long run non smokers cost more because they live longer thus requiring more tax payer support. I say make all of them smoke it up 2 packs daily, plus it is prison population control.

this will cause alot of problems. i feel sorry for the guards working there. you do the math. 1 inmate serving a life sentence he has nothing to lose since he will not be getting out then takin his smokes away....= ???????

GOOD DEAL I DONT SMOKE AND DONT FEEL I SHOULD PAY FOR HEALTH BILLS CAUSE SOMEONE WHO BREAKS THE LAW WANTS TO SMOKE. THE WAY THINGS ARE GOING WE'LL ALL BE IN PRISON FOR NOT PAYING OUR OWN BILLS AND HEALTH CARE. WHOS GOING TO BE ABLE TO KEEP UP.
Flag for moderationFriday, May 9 at 10:49 AM mike fulton wrote ...
Will the guard be able to smoke? Maybe state workers should not be able to smoke. Do taxes pay for there health care? Hay I also pay city tax, Maybe it time to look into not letting anyone that our taxes pay smoke.

Wow, this will anger the Democrats. Clearly, their idea was to infringe on the rights of tax paying law abiding citizens when they passed the smoking ban but now that these "poor opressed" prisoners will not be able to smoke all hell might break loose on the left.

i feel for the bar owners. They are going to be loosing out on a lot of business. Your non-smokers will go to the local pub have one beer or a glass of pepsi and leave while your smokers would spend hours in there spending their money at the pub.

this is not going to go over well with the inmates. My husband is in prison & I PREFER that he smokes in there. Calms his nerves. I don't smoke but I don't care that he does. Anything to keep him calm. The DOC is abusing their power once again & nobody is able to stop them.

To some of these people all they have are cigarettes, now the state wants to take that away too. Maybe people might be less likely to commit crimes if they know they can't smoke in jail?

This makes me happy. I was worried that the inmates had more rights then I did. Guess I won't have to right that bad check so I can go smoke somewhere.
Flag for moderationFriday, May 9 at 9:00 AM johnny wrote ...
That's right they're in prison to be punished so take away all the rights they have so they will be use to it when they get out and find out no one has any rights left.

That's good. Maybe they will ban the cable TV and other things tax payers pay for.

It shouldn't have been allowed in the first place. Their stay there is not suppose to have luxuries, not that smoking is necessarily a luxury, (I'm not a smoker but those that are, seem to think pretty highly of it), but I don't think that I need to spend my money on their health bills, when I can't afford my own doctors visits, or the gas to get to them!

It is about time that this is done. Prisoner have too many benefits and this will help on the cost of tax payers on prisioners. There is a large population of prisoners that are seen at the University. We need to do more things like the sheriff in Arizona does to his prisoners.
