CEDAR RAPIDS -- A decision that could reinvent Cedar Rapids' riverfront could happen within the next week. Two design firms are competing for the job.
The companies have proposed everything from pedestrian bridges to riverfront restaurants.
Right now, the Cedar River dam is hidden under the highway. The Boston-based Sasaki firm suggests moving the dam to a place where everyone can see it.
"The possibilities of doing that I think would be extremely beneficial for Cedar Rapids,” Council member Justin Shields said.
A rival Minneapolis-based firm named "Close" says an iconic pedestrian bridge would bring both sides of the city together.
"It is absolutely a very exciting element,” council member Brian Fagan said.
The goal is to change the river from something that runs through Cedar Rapids into something at unites the city.
For example, riverfront restaurants could move into the now-empty Konstantino's and Muddy Waters buildings. The eateries could then add seating near the water.
But, both competing firms said it could take at least a decade to reinvent the area. Some council members said they're not willing to wait that long.
"When I hear the 10-15 year stuff, I don't like that. I think we should be able to do something within the next year or two,” Shields said.
Even though multiple different plans to reinvent the riverfront have drifted away over the years, council members promise that won't happen again.
"I think this community has lived or cycled too much in two-year cycles where decisions were made for elections that occurred every two years,” Fagan said.
Now, there's a new form of government and a new focus on the feature that's always flowed through this city.
Boston-based Sasaki has worked on riverfront projects in Cincinnati, Indianapolis and Washington, D.C.
The Minneapolis-based "Close" firm has overseen developments in the Twin Cities, Dubuque and Omaha. Council members will likely choose between the two next week.

I saw the presentations on TV yesterday. Move the dam to make a spot for boating and skating? The river is not wide enough for real boating. The Minneapolis people had the right idea....gets some new connections and other reasons to go downtown.

Man, for a pretty small up front cost we could maybe get some good ideas for people that have worked a lot in river towns. I guess I just don't understand why you would even consider moving the 5 in 1 dam. From what I saw on TV, I like the Minneapolis guys ideas. Seem pretty smart to me.

I agree with the casino comment, you know if this city would of voted for it, cedar rapids would be full of recreational opportunities. Wwaterparks, hotels, river front district all because of the casino. BUt i do think that this is a plus for the city developing the waterfront is something we need.

why doesn't this city do something for the children of Cedar Rapids, like supor the Imax, Museum, build a zoo, or create more things for families and children to do? I beleive thsi city is all about Rockwell and the employees who work there. There is a lot of old money in this town and it has the potential to be great instead of mediocure. Property taxes are surely high enough to support great things, where are they going? Certainly not to the children of the community.

Want to do the city a favor? Extend Highway 100.

If we would have allowed the Casino, the area would have been developed by now and the city would be thriving.

Please let's build a new dam. Fifty stories tall with pumps to push the water over the top creating a huge waterfall full of tropical fish and a circular walkway around the top to view the rest of the city which we'll have to decorate to make all the new tourists happy. Send my consulting check for mucho dinero soon.

Like the city isn't broke in the first place! What a joke. CR should be more concerned with just "cleaning" the city up first. What a dump-

Where are we getting all this money to do these studies? I remember now, from laying off city workers and department heads. The streets last winter were the worst I have seen. Sewer rates up 11%. Call the police and see how long you have to wait to get an officer? There are not enough police. Enough is enough. Where does it end?

It looks like I'm in the minority here, but I think making the riverfront nicer is very positive. Moving the dam may be a bit too much, but if they were to develop both sides of the river, then a pedestrian-only bridge is not outlandish. I think it's time we do something and stop naysaying everything the council does. If you don't like it, then why aren't you running for a council seat? I guess it's easier to complain and not do anything, isn't it?

No more city paid high priced marketing firms or consultants!!!!! I am sure we could conduct a marketing study and the tax payers of Cedar Rapids would agree!!!!

This city council is just amazing. They should be focus on how they are going to be paying for higher fuel costs, the aging infrastructure among other real issues, instead of selling golf courses, spending money on marketing firms and consultants.

Where would you move the dam too? Maybe we should move some bridges too? Maybe these all these firms that the city hires should actually visit the city before making unrealistic suggestions. I am sure they are charging 100k or more too.

I hope they find some endangered fish,or bird, or God forbid, a butterfly, in the area where they want to build this stupid pedestrian bridge. Maybe then the construction could be delayed for 20 years, just like the Hwy 100 project.

why do we need to spend money to hire someone from far away to tell us how to make our city look. Boston? I was in Boston once and it remined me of Gotham city before Batman cleaned it up. We just built the new dam 20 or so years ago. I can see shore up the dikes a bit to protect from flooding . What are they saying Replace the 5 in 1 ???

Yes! Let's take out a completely functional dam and move it so that everyone can look at it. Or better yet, let's add another bridge since the several bridges and streets (with sidewalks) aren't doing enough to connect one side of the river to the other. Are these people serious? I can't believe our council members think these are good ideas. When is the next election?
