Woman Awarded $382,500 in Case Against U.S. Postal Service

By Becky Ogann

DES MOINES (AP) - A federal jury has awarded a black woman more than $380,000 in her racial discrimination lawsuit against the U.S. Postal Service.

Sheryl Rogers, a former mail sorter at the Des Moines Post Office, said the harassment included chants of racial epithets by her co-workers.

The lawsuit was filed in October 2004 and names Post Master General John E. Potter.

The jury awarded Rogers $382,500 on Tuesday after five days of testimony.

Her lawyer said Thursday the jury believed the post office allowed a hostile work environment to fester.

A Postal Service spokesman said he hasn't seen the lawsuit and couldn't immediately comment.

Rogers testified that she complained of her treatment but her supervisors failed to do anything.

You people are so judgemental. You have no idea what this lady actually went through. And if my postage goes up for this, I am thankful it went to a lady like her. She has been through a lot and I shudder to think of her coming on here and seeing some of these comments.

To what a joke: the lawsuit is not why postage cost so much. the USPS is over-supervised. They have way too much management to the point that the managers that manage the mangers have managers that oversee them. that's the joke! I would love for Congress to explain why/how the post office needs to operate under this manner. every single book of stamps I buy is prepacked ($ wasted)!

A hostile work enviroment is created by the employee but the employer (US Post Office) is responsible for managing the enviroment. If they weren't willing to stop the "name calling" then they should PAY! I hope they take employees more seriously if this happens again. May guess they will! For those whom don't uderstand how someone could get so much money for what you call "just names and to quit crying" then you truely don't understand the human condition!!!

Sometimes I wonder where this country is going too! Everyone wants to sue for every little thing. I worked in an enviorment like she did but i turned it around on them and they did not like it so after that we got along. It must have been just for the money becuase I would not want to hire someone who cries over things and don't stand tough. But that is me, learned to be tough and not be a cry baby but if I had been a cry baby than I would have gotten $$$$$. Oh, well, i earned my money!!!

Hey "what a joke" If the "people like this" you are referring to are the ones who were issuing racial slurs, then yes, you are correct.
