FAYETTE - Officials have made an arrest in connection to an alleged sexual assault at Upper Iowa University.

Eriq Damon Johnson, 19, of Bellwood, Illinois, was arrested on Thursday and charged with sexual abuse in the third degree, which is a class "C" felony.

Thursday morning at 4:00 am the Fayette County Sheriff's Office received a call that a sexual assault had occurred in one of the Upper Iowa University dorms. Once deputies arrived they conducted an investigation which resulted in a search of two dorm rooms.

Johnson was arrested around 11:00 am. He remains in custody at the Fayette County Jail.

This happens on and off campus there more than people know. The police have substantial evidence and the guy will go to prison for his crime. Who in their right mind would feel sorry for this guy or want to support him.

The only praying you need to be doing is for Bubba to take it easy on your buddy in the pen. Just because his family prays doesn't mean the guy is innocent!

Being a former alumni at UIU, I know first hand they cover up "incidents" like this all of the time....

A former good friend of mine, who everyone includinig me, didn't think could harm a fly, sexually assaulted one of my best girl friends while drinking in college. Knowing someone and thinking they are so nice and innocent doesn't mean a darn thing. You have no idea what he is like when he is drunk and alone to make his own decisions. If you think this poor girl is so cynical that she wishes to destroy your nephew's future by charging this, then that seems completely unlikely.

Don't forget to tack on a Hate Crime charge, if the victim was not of the same race as the perp. Or do we look the other way in this case?

Unless you were with him at that time you have no idea whether he did it or not, you may want to believe he didn't do it but that isn't proof. Everyone is capable of doing great harm and violating another person whether sexually or assaulting them.

I too went to a small private college in Iowa. I think it is the norm to cover these things up. You are expected to go to the school authorities before the police. Parents - tell your kids to go to the police if anything like this happens - otherwise attempts will be made to minimize it.

I went to school at UIU and this sort of thing has happened several times. Usually the school just tried to cover it up and handle it there own way unless the girl went to the police. Good for her its about time that the secrets get discovered that this school isn't as good as people may think. They need to stop covering crime up.

You are ONLY innocent until proven guilty in a court of Law. In the court of public opinion you are guilty until proven innocent. A investigation waa performed at 4 in the morning. Only bad things happen after midnight. The officers obviously had enough evidence to charge him so he will obviously be on the defensive until trial.

colleges do cover these things up, they have their ways, who wants to send their kid to a school with sexual assaults on campus? I went to a small private school in Iowa, and I know of more than one time the school deals with it within themselves and unless the victim goes to the police instead of the school first, it's hushed. Sad, but true.....

Come on people have you forgotten, we threw out the bill of rights a long time ago. If he did it send him to prison with a jar of vaseline and if he didn't do it send him anyway but give him two jars.

Convicted - arrested. It is all the say thing. Once your name and picture get plastered all over the media your whole life is changed for ever. Sure he could have been the one BUT what if he was NOT. This guy becomes the victim more than the girl. The media should not be plastering people names and faces over the air until there is a conviction. If he is guilty then fire away, but the old saying of you are innocent until proven guilty goes out the window as soon as the media makes it known.

What do you mean UIU has covered up in the past? If it goes to law enforcement it becomes public knowledge. Colleges and universities also have to post CLERY statistics on this type of incident. I don't see how your comment relates to the story.

What happened to 'innocent until proven guilty'? This guy just got arrested and has yet to go to trial. It's inflammatory remarks like this that cause trouble. Get your facts straight before you post something.

That surprises me he was convicted. Not the first time this has happened there. Usually UIU tries to cover this sort of thing up. Victom must have spoke up. Good for her.
