Whirlpool to Hire 120 at Middle Amana Refrigerator Plant

By Sara Stewart

CEDAR RAPIDS (AP) - More jobs at coming to Whirlpool Corp. refrigerator plant in Middle Amana in eastern Iowa.

The Benton Harbor, Michigan based company says it's hiring 120 workers to meet demand for new models and staffing issues caused by summer vacations.

Spokeswoman Monica Teague says the new hires are in addition to the 170 workers already hired this year at Middle Amana. Whirlpool employs more than 2,000 at the plant, which was part of the company's acquisition of Newton-based Maytag in 2006.

The Middle Amana plant produces bottom-freezer refrigerators sold under Whirlpool, Amana, Maytag and other brand names.

There wouldn't be a problem with having to fire a lot of people if they would just do their job!!!!!

Whirlpool/Amana is getting what they paid for with a cheap contract(have to work over time just to buy gas for work, low pay scale!!!),crappy insurance, lousy work conditions,HOT(can't wear shorts or tank tops anymore,,but the office is nice and cool all summer when its HOT!!)constant lay offs in the fall, schedule's up and down, bumping & reducing of worker's,people treated terrible on second shift, can only blame management for the problems, the employee's don't matter!!

The unemployment rate is relatively low in Iowa, but new jobs almost always sound good to me. There is attrition in every job forum. You're simply not going to get 120 people that won't call in sick, won't walk off the job, work consistently, etc. so you will always need to find better workers. Quality workers are hard to come by. Best of luck to all those that are ready, willing & able to work.

Last month they tried to hire almost 200. Many of the new hires quit within the first week. Probably a good temp job for the summer, but not much of a chance for long term employment.

if we get some people that can actually work then we wont have a problem they hire all theese people who cant speak english and cant work but those are the people who dont walk out we need them to walk out and we would be better off. if you cant take the heat then dont apply.

watch out all you new hires... they do this almost every year. Come this fall they will have too many people and will be laying off yet again... they were just about to have a lay off in march... apply at your own risk.

120 workers only to be laid off in the future or to go on strike. Seems like its not a good place to work if you want job security and a job without drama.

What this doesn't say is that they started hiring 250, stopped at 200, they then started voluntary layoff and then stopped that because alot of new people were quitting, now they have to start again to replace the people that quit and for summer help.
