NEVADA (AP) - Two women have been arrested for allegedly stealing more than $50,000 from an elderly Elkhart woman's retirement fund.
Michele Hefler, of Boone, and Doris Anderson, of Granger, have each been charged with first-degree theft, extortion and ongoing criminal conduct.
Authorities say the women took Bertha Hainline, 88, to banks in Story and Polk counties and coerced her into withdrawing money from her retirement account. They say Anderson pressured her for money, telling Hainline she needed money to pay bills.
Hainline called police in December when she only had about $50 left.
Authorities say the three women are acquaintances, but did not describe the exact relationship between them.
Anderson and Hefler are both being held in the Story County jail under $60,000 bond.
