Cedar Rapids Murder Suspect Makes First Court Appearance

By Dave Franzman, Reporter

CEDAR RAPIDS - Wednesday night, officers with the Cedar Rapids and Marion Police Departments arrested Jacovan "Jake" Bush, 19, of Fairfax in connection with the shooting death of Thomas Horvath.

Officers took him into custody without incident at 590 Bentley Drive #5 in Marion.

Investigators say Horvath, 19, was shot once in the head and once in the abdomen at the Raintree Apartments off 16th Avenue Southwest in Cedar Rapids Tuesday night. The shooting occurred after a group of people, estimated by police at five to ten, got into a scuffle at the Raintree Apartments on 16th Avenue S.W. Police say the incident actually began somewhere else on the southwest side and then ended up at that apartment complex.

Horvath died Wednesday morning at Mercy Medical Center.

In court on Thursday, Bush made an initial appearance to hear the charge of first degree murder. He was ordered held in the Linn County Jail on a cash only bond of $1-million dollars.

Bush's next court appearance is now set for April 25th with a preliminary hearing. However, those appearance are typically canceled when the county attorney's office files what's known as trial information paperwork.

Two people who made be connected with the victim attended the hearing and were escorted out of the small courtroom by deputies.
A victim's advocate with the Horizons survivor's program said family members would not comment, nor be identified at this point.

Afterward, Earline Pledge, the suspect's grandmother, did speak to the press. She said the family is devastated by the accusations, but did not know of any problems between the victim Horvath and her grandson Bush.

Once again our detectives/investigators at the PD worked long hours to make an arrest. If it is true that witnesses provided information to the police - good for them. This is what should happen when a homicide occurs! My guess is that all of these people that are denying that either gentleman was a less than stellar citizen, don't really know either of them. Often the friends ("family") know more than a person's actual family. Good job PD - thank you once again for all of the long hours!
