CEDAR RAPIDS - Cedar Rapids Police have released the name of the victim in a Tuesday night shooting.
Police say Thomas Ray Horvath, 19, was shot around 11:00 pm Tuesday night at the Raintree Apartments located at 4900 16th Ave. SW. Horvath was taken to Mercy Hospital, where he died early Wednesday morning. Police did not release an address for Horvath saying they were still investigating.
Several witnesses told TV9 versions of the same story. They all remembered hearing a group of people arguing in the parking lot at the apartment complex.
As the voices got louder outside, one witness, Richard Schwertfeger, remembered hearing someone say "calm down, calm down." Shortly after that, there was a rapid series of popping sounds.
The witnesses also saw several people jam into at least two cars and speed away. One witness told TV9 she immediately called police, but did not go outside until officers arrived. She said police were on the scene very quickly.
One witness, who didn't want her name used or face shown, said she was putting grandkids in a car outside when the shooting occurred. She said she heard "boom..boom..boom...boom...shots fired and there had to be at least four. My daughter's boyfriend said get down, get down and everybody got in the car and we tried to protect the kids."
In a late afternoon news conference, Lt. Kenneth Washburn of CRPD investigations, said there were perhaps five to ten people involved in the altercation that ended in a shooting. The dispute apparently started somewhere else and then ended up at the Raintree Apartments. Washburn said he did not believe the homicide victim and others involved had any connection to the apartments.
Horvath was shot once in the head and once in the abdomen.
Investigators say they have promising leads and have interviewed some of the people involved in the dispute. But at this point they are not ready to name a suspect nor explain any possible reason for the shooting.

Well, to all who have bad mouthed the CRPD, I hope the crow you're eating right now tastes good. They do care about catching criminals and are very determined to see that justice is served. And for those who cry about being harrassed by them... well I bet they only "harrass" you because you seem to always end up in the wrong place at the wrong time. In other words, it's your own fault.

Someone took it upon themselves to take a life. Wether it involved drugs is NOT the issue here, but that a young life was taken. There are always rumors when something like this happens. People should learn to shut their mouths and think before speaking. If you know for a fact what this involves, then go to the police, otherwise keep your comments to yourself. God be with both families in this time. Remember not one, but two families have now lost their children. One to death, one to prison

What is it with you people still and the police helicopters and trying to fellate CRPD? Try getting harassed by them once or twice before you think they're so "great" and that chopper? You could see just how LITTLE crime that thing solved right on their "we're a special bunch" section showing all the crime it "assisted" in helping solve. Very, very, few things were changed in any way other than the amount of money used to keep a Vietnam warbird in the air. This city is broke.

I grew up with Tom. Elementary, middle, and high school. I perfectly remember all of the times we hung out as children. We lived blocks away and we'd always make time to meet up. I even remember running away from his dog while he chased me trying to get into his house off of O Ave. I actually just thought of Tom today and it's crazy that this has to be his fate. Tom was PROTECTING HIS FRIEND like always. Tom was not a bad man. I hope he is in a better place looking down upon us. R.I.P Tommy H. :
