WATERLOO - In the middle of the annual cookie fund raiser for girl scout troops, the organization Iowa's Bravest asked the girls for a favor. Iowa's Bravest wanted the girls to collect a few extra boxes for the soldiers overseas.
Thursday night it was obvious how well they responded.
"I didn't expect this many cookies," said Ron McMahon with Iowa's Bravest.
Iowa's Bravest usually makes care packages for Iowa troops during Christmas, as well as other times during the year.
This is the first time they asked the Girl Scouts.
It paid off with 3,800 boxes of cookies, organizers originally hoped for 500 boxes. But, they soon realized a lot of people wanted to help.
The girls said it wasn't a hard sell.
"Everyone knows that the soldiers are in Iraq fighting and risking their lives for ours. That was the least we could do, just give them back girl scout cookies," said girl scout Kelly Olsen.
It'll cost around $5,000 to ship the more than 80 large postal boxes full of cookies to Iraq, but volunteers have answered that call too.
These cookies are on a fast track, the post office says they'll be in Iraq by Tuesday.
And you can bet days after that the cookies will be gone.
You can also bet they won't be forgotten.
