Winter Damage Prompts Some Early, Extensive Road Repairs

HIAWATHA- Some road departments now have to do more extensive repair work than normal for this time of year.

One example of the problem surfaced in Hiawatha with the recent closing of a part of Robins Road. It wasn't a simple pothole problem. Instead, about 300 feet of the road failed so thoroughly the city was forced to close it for a complete rebuilding project.

One complication is it's too early to repair asphalt roads. The companies that provide the hot mix asphalt won't fire up those production plants until sometime next month.

Dick Ransom, Hiawatha City Engineer, said "we've already contacted the contractor to put us on their list to start early to get that section of road resurfaced again."

Until then, crews will repair the underlying section of road that failed and cover it with gravel. Motorists can use the graveled section of road until asphalt is ready for final repairs.

Other road departments say they were expecting to see more extensive damage due to severe winter conditions. And they are starting to see what they expected.

It's too bad that this has become so severe. It's almost depressing to get a new car because it gets teared up in monthes on these roads.

I-380 is really nice, but highway 965 by swisher is really falling apart. some of the bumps almost bounce you off the road if you are going too fast.

They did a fine job of patching the potholes on 380 when the cameras were there. Perhaps if you would send a crew out to Highway 30 west, the road crews might actually appear for the first time in 10 years. We've named most of the potholes.
