State Hires Bee Expert

(AP Photo/Keystone, Lisa Maire) A bee flies towards a yellow blossom in Zurich, Switzerland on Thursday, May 4, 2006. State Hires Bee Expert

By Cassie Huisman

DES MOINES (AP) - The state has hired an expert to help
its bee industry.
Andrew Joseph has been hired to be the State Apiarist (A'
pe-uh-rist) for Iowa. He will oversee bee registration and
inspection, conduct beekeeper education courses and conduct public
outreach on bees and beekeeping.
His hiring was announced Thursday by Iowa Secretary of
Agriculture Bill Northey.
Joseph received his Masters in Science in Entomology from the
University of Kentucky.
Iowa has three part-time inspectors that examine bee hives
across the state.
The state had an apiarist until the position was suspended in
2001 because of budget constraints. The Legislature restored
funding for the position last year.
