IOWA CITY -- Days after a devastating murder, friends and family came together to mourn an Iowa City family.
Autopsy results released by the State Medical Examiner's Office confirm the entire Sueppel family died from blunt force trauma to the head. Police say Steven Sueppel might have used a baseball bat to murder his wife and four children. Then, he killed himself by driving into a post on the interstate.
Wednesday night, family and friends tried to look beyond those details to honor the kind, caring family they remember.
Loving prayers and trickling tear drops united friends and family who are still struggling to understand what happened at the Sueppel's home.
"I just wanted to show support for the Sueppel family and let them know that we care for them and we're here for them," family friend Ann Browning said.
Steven and Sheryl Sueppel's parents stood together at the vigil. Their fathers also said a few brief words to the crowd. They thanked everyone for being respectful and sympathetic during this emotional time.
"It's heartfelt to see everyone coming together and supporting them. No one has a bad word to say about a Sueppel family member, and I think this shows it," Browning said.
Neighbors wanted to have the vigil in the Sueppel's front yard because they have so many fond memories of the children playing outside.
"We knew the family very well and we knew the children. We always enjoyed watching the kids play and Steven and Sheryl playing with the kids and doing fun activities," neighbor Glen Meisner said.
Everyone who spoke at the vigil mentioned how much everyone in family cared for each other. They described the children as fun and friendly. They said Steven and Sheryl were the perfect parents and role models.
"We have questions and it's hard to understand, but having the support of family and friends -- that's why we're here," Meisner said.
Many questions will probably never be answered. So, now all anyone can do is simply try to focus on bright, happy memories during this dark, depressing time.
Another vigil service is scheduled for 7:30 Friday night. All six Sueppel family members will be laid to rest together this weekend.
The visitation is Friday from three to nine at Saint Mary's Catholic Church in Iowa City. The funeral is at the church Saturday morning at ten. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Cemetery.
