CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - A 17-year-old boy has been charged with attempted murder after he allegedly shot a man in Cedar Rapids while stealing drugs.
Cedric T. Lang of Cedar Rapids has been charged as an adult with attempted murder, first-degree robbery and first-degree burglary after the shooting Thursday night. Lang and two other suspects are accused of entering an apartment at 720 1/2 Fourth Ave. SE through an unlocked door around 10 p.m. that night. According to police, Lang used a rifle to shoot Joshua R. Spears, 35, once in the left arm following a brief argument.
Spears was treated at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City. His injuries were not life-threatening, police said.
According to a criminal complaint, the robbery charge was filed because marijuana was stolen during the incident. Police believe Spears was targeted in the incident, but not all the circumstances were clear.
Cedar Rapids police have not announced any other arrests in the case. An investigation was continuing.
