5 Murdered in Iowa City Home

By Nick Weig

IOWA CITY - Early Monday afternoon Iowa City Police confirmed a woman and four children were murdered at a home located at 629 Barrington Road.

Police say the victims are the members of the Sueppel Family. They are Ethan, Mira, Eleanor, Seth and their mother Sheryl.

At 6:31am, the Iowa City Police received a 911 call from a cellular phone. The caller said that police needed to immediately respond to 629 Barrington Rd and then disconnected. Dispatch was unable to make contact on call-back.

Responding officers found the house unlocked. Officers located five deceased persons, the adult female resident and four children.

Officers did not locate the adult male resident, Steven Sueppel. One of the family’s vehicles, a tan Toyota Sienna minivan, Iowa license 501BLO, was missing.

ICPD notified area law enforcement agencies and the University of Iowa issued a Hawk-Alert.

There has also been a single vehicle motor vehicle fatality crash on I-80.

Monday afternoon police identified that vehicle as the one belonging to Sueppel, however, they haven't positively identified the body found inside the vehicle.

Autopsy results are expected Tuesday.

We all feel rage along with the pain. This community is united in pain, but we must be careful that we don't allow the anger we feel to grow. It will only serve to make the anguish multiply. I think we all could benefit at this time from healing - but how does it begin? How do we resolve all this pain and confusion? Our community needs support available for all of us touched by this terrible event. We need to pull together and not fray, not come undone.

What if Mr. Sueppel didn't kill his wife & family or even himself, but they were all killed by someone else. He was involved with drugs apparently, so maybe he was going to plea bargain @ his court hearing in exchange for details on the drug dealers - the drug dealers found out - then got rid of all of them!!! It does happen in real life!!! not just the movies!! This is why some people have to change their identities. Think about it.

This tragedy highlights how problems with drug abuse can figuratively and now literally destroy a family. There are wonderful resources available to assist people with addictions or behavioral health problems. In Iowa City, there is MECCA services,a community-based, not-for-profit organization offering substance abuse and behavioral health services - including family counseling. Imagine had this man sought assistance for his problems, whether drug related or just behavioral. A happier outcome.

I will not be judgemental about Mr. Sueppel. A person in his right mind would not commit this type of atrocity against his wife and children. I am an no way excusing his actions; the fact that he murdered innocent victims is horrific. However, mental illness can be as deadly as physical illness and this proves it.
