COUNCIL BLUFFS (AP) - The Ameristar Casino in Council
Bluffs is rethinking plans for a $100 million expansion - and a
proposed statewide smoking ban is a factor.

The expansion, slated to be completed next year, would make room
for 600 new slot machines and 20 additional table games. It also
would add nearly 100 jobs and 175 construction jobs

But Ameristar spokeswoman Christie Scott says officials need to
weigh whether the investment makes sense without a permanent
exemption for casinos.

The House has voted to allow smoking in bars, restaurants and
casinos. The Senate wants to virtually outlaw all indoor smoking.

Scott says in states with smoking bans, there has been a
negative impact on casino operations. She says she expects a
similar result if the Legislature bans smoking in Iowa's casinos.
