Randolph Rescinds $5 Cat Bounty for Catch and Release Program

DES MOINES (AP) - Cat haters, never mind. The Iowa town of Randolph has rescinded a $5 bounty on wild cats.

Instead, the town has agreed to work with animal rescue groups on a catch, neuter and release program.

Mayor Vince Trively says the town has told them to "get it lined up.''

The City Council approved the bounty after complaints about dozens of feral cats. Under the policy, stray cats without collars would be taken to a veterinarian, and if they weren't claimed, they'd be euthanized.

That caused an uproar among animal lovers and animal rights group around the world after media reports about the town's plans.

Thursday, the city voted to end the bounty and put together a task force.

Three organizations, Maryland-based Alley Cat Allies, Best Friends Animal Society of Utah and Feline Friendz in Nebraska, are involved. The groups will meet next week to come up with a plan.
