IOWA CITY - James Cleveland and Arvell Nelson are no longer part of the University of Iowa roster, according to Head Coach Kirk Ferentz.
James Cleveland, a wide receiver from Baytown, Texas, was arrested last month in his dorm room by campus police after officers found 21 units of the prescription pain killer oxycodone and 24 doses of the muscle relaxant carisoprodol in his room. Cleveland pleaded not guilty to drug charges on Wednesday.
Cleveland was arrested along with his teammate and roommate, Arvell Nelson. Nelson, a reserve quarterback, was charged with possession of marijuana. He has not entered a plea.
Ferentz announced their dismissal on Thursday. The players were initally suspended from the team following their arrests.
Cleveland played as a red-shirt freshman last season. He started 11 of 12 games and was Iowa's second leading receiver with 36 catches for 464 yards. Nelson saw limited action in only three games last year.
