DUBUQUE - There's a sign things are getting better in Dubuque County. Law officers allowed tow truck drivers to start pulling cars from the ditches. A tow ban in recent days meant there was plenty to do.
At 9:30 a.m. the Dubuque County Sheriff lifted the tow-ban, by 9:45 tow-truck driver Chris Bibb was on his way to the first of 17 vehicles he had to dig out.
Bibb said, "Somebody just went in the ditch back there just now, because of the ice on the road."
Make that 18. And the list is growing as vehicles continue to pile up along the roadways.
Bibb said, "It's a little more difficult when they do release it because then we've got so much built up to go out and get, it kind of explodes."
Some cars have been sitting along Highway 20 since Sunday.
Driver Steve Dawe said, "They say we can't go out there because there is a ban. That was yesterday and today I had to call in for work just to get them to get my car."
Slowly but surely Bibb does what he does best. One car at a time.
"This is the busiest winter I've ever worked." Snow and ice covered roads normally mean 12 to 15 hours of work for Bibb and he has just one piece of advice for drivers.
Bibb said, "Just drive smart that's all I ask, and slowing down is a part of that."
Bibb says there's no telling when his day will end. It's a good thing he enjoys his job.
