BURLINGTON (AP) - The death of a woman has whose body was found along a road in Middletown in southeast Iowa has been ruled a homicide.

Vicky Kerfoot of Middletown was found January 29th. Officials say she died of injuries consistent with being hit by a car.

Matthew Smith of Burlington was arrested this week and charged with failure to render aid in a fatal accident. It's unclear whether prosecutors will amend the charges.

The state medical examiner's office says the death was ruled a homicide, in part, because Kerfoot died in a hit-and-run. If a driver stops to aid a victim of a crash, such a case would more likely be ruled an accident, depending on other circumstances.
