CEDAR RAPIDS - Hundreds of businesses closed early Wednesday because of the weather. But the weather knows no mercy for the mailman. Since 7:30 AM, they trudged non-stop through their snowiest conditions in 20 years.

Snow caked Pierre Saba's uniform, and ice clinged to his beard. 300 houses were on this Cedar Rapids letter carrier's route. And every step is a strain.

Saba says, "(We) like to have a clear approach to the mailbox as safe as you can."

When residents cleared a path, it definitely helped.

"You bust your ankle, and you're out for six weeks. You want to help the team out, because there's a lot of people down."

Some of his fellow-carriers couldn't make it to work, so Saba had an extra load.

"The quicker we get out, because we don't want to redeliver this the next day. That's just more work."

They still missed about a quarter of deliveries, but what doesn't make it will go out the next day.
