Oskaloosa Girl Dies in Rollover Crash

OSKALOOSA - A nine year old girl is dead following a violent crash in Mahaska County.

The Iowa State Patrol says Mica George, 33, of Oskaloosa was driving a jeep at Galeston and Gambell Avenues Thursday morning when he lost control and hit a utility pole.

The jeep rolled, throwing Morgan Malloy out of the vehicle and pinning her underneath. The state patrol says the Oskaloosa 9-year old wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

Braxton George, 3, was also hurt in the crash. The state patrol says his life was saved because he was wearing a seatbelt.

The investigation continues.

Did Braxton by any chance play T-ball last summer? My little boy played T-ball with another little boy whose name was Braxton. He was such a sweetheart. My heart goes out to all of the family. I hope Mica is doing okay.

the boy is fine, he was released the same day of the accident. I saw him at the funeral. He's missing his sister a lot.

So many came to pay their respects, I heard over 1800 people came to the visitation and it took an hour and a half just to get thru the line. I was at the funeral and couldn't believe all the young children that knew Morgan who came and wanted to pay their respects and the amount of people who went to the cemetary was unreal also, as it was bitter cold that day.My heart goes out to all involved.Morgan now rests in peace. God bless this little angel in heaven. God be with you all. Rest in peace.

Mica and her family, my heart breaks for you right now. I don't know any of you but I read about the accident and my prayers are with you and your family. To see such horrific remarks on here makes me sick! Pay no mind to petty remarks from those who wish to place blame. It's called an accident for a reason. May your sweet angel reast in peace. I havent heard how the little boy is doing. hope he will be ok. God Bless you ALL

The way this article was written upsets me to no end. It seems very short on facts and full of what they think took place. If they can't take the time to research things like the sex of the people involved in the accident or how printing articles the snide undertones may make people close to the matter feel--they shouldn't print things at all!! To all those that are obviously the perfect parent--your opinion on the matter isn't important unless you've been where Mica is and want to offer support

All of you out there passing judgment and preaching about seat belts. Have you NEVER done anything wrong in your life? And second I am reading about how a seatbelt would have saved her life, well what about the young man who died here a few years ago who was wearing his seatbelt. Yes that's right it cost him his life because he was wearing it. His car rolled over into a ditch full of water and there was so much pressure on the seatbelt he couldn't get it undone and he drowned. Think about it!

Please let me asure you that Morgan WAS seatbelted in, and the State Patroll officer told Mica the force of hitting the power pole would have broken her neck. Mica is a GREAT mom and now is the time for prayers and support . Heaven forbid you should have to walk a mile in her shoes, then you really might know what it's like- to loose. It was an accident, things like this happen. She was my nice and a great child, she will be greatly missed and Mica NEEDS all the love and support she can get.

lets remember what really happened here. this little girl is dead and it was an accident. rather than bickering over parenting skills while driving we all need to take a step back and honor her and her family. my heart goes out to the family.

I am a relative of the family and know Mica is the kind of mother that would be sure her child was in a seat belt. Some of the judgemental comments that have been made are uncalled for. Unless you are God maybe you should keep your comment to your self unless you have a prayer for the family.

my little girl was buckled in but for whatever reason the seat belt failed. please dont judge mica because this is not her fault. she took all the proper precautions with our children!

It is true...we need to make sure that our children are buckled up safely, however, children have minds of their own and can unbuckle themselves at any time...let's not be to quick to judge...think about what the mother is going through right now....negativity is NOT what the family needs at this time..I know the family and this little girl was amazing and will be greatly missed...my heart goes out to her family and what they need right now is our support and our prayers

Coming from personal experience of having children of the same ages, I know that children that start out being buckled in a car sometimes end up unbuckling soon after. A parent does everything they can to rebuckle but sometimes they are unable to safely stop a vehicle immediately. Our heart and prayers go out to the family. Mica is a great mother.

No matter what anyone says, the little girl is gone. I feel for all involved. Let's not let the loss of this little girl go without a reason. Everyone learn from this. Remind your family members and friends to buckle up. Do this and Morgan will probably have saved a life.

its abut then again. but im guessing that the mother wasnt paying attention and was yelling at the kids or something and lost control. you cant do that it the kids are not doing what they are suppose to THEN STOP THE VEHICLE!!!!

I have caught my kids unbuckling their seat belt and yes the car was pulled off the road as soon as it was safe to do so. Even worse my mother-in-law decided to take one of my kids out of their car seat once because she thought they didn't look comfortable, about that time some one almost hit us and I had to do some wild swerves at highway speed to avoid them. Everyone was okay, but needless to say I did have some unkind words for my mother-in-law that day.

First of all: Jen - I wasn't judging I was simply giving my opinion. I don't think you should comment to people not to give their respects to the family. I came to realize that I too have been in a situation where my children have unbuckled themselves for whatever reason and sometimes not even realizing it until we reached our destination. I guess we just need to keep talking to our children about the importance of wearing a seat belt and keeping it on because it saves lives.

I have caught my children unbuckling their seatbelts and I have immediately pulled over to rebuckle them. I have had many talks with them but sometimes they unexpectedly do those things. So, unless you know for sure what happened, please don't judge and give your respects to the family.

If my children ever unbuckled themselves, the vechile would be stopped until they rebuckled. I have never had to do this.....maybe because they know thier mother will be, dare I say it, mad at them!

Friday, Jan 11 at 12:52 PM claire wrote ...

we should all take the time to buckle our children and ourselves in. also take the time to talk to your kids about KEEPING their seatbelts on. let's hope that this unfortunate tradgedy can be a lesson learned and help save the lives of others.

Just to clarify, it's she, not he. Mica George is Morgan's MOTHER.

Friday, Jan 11 at 11:41 AM Concerned Parent wrote ...

Even if it was the case here that the little girl undid her own seatbelt. There are many people out there that don't buckle their kids at all. Let this be a lesson to them. Take that extra 30 seconds to help save the life of a child.

Friday, Jan 11 at 11:25 AM Oskaloosa Mom wrote ...

Mica is not a man, but a woman and mother to both children. There is also another daughter who was not in the vehicle. I cannot imagine the grief the mother and family is going through. I agree, don't be too quick to judge. My children use seatbelts, but will unbuckle to reach something. It is never safe to unbuckle unless the vehicle is stopped. Tell your kids, I'll tell mine. An unbuckled person is also a danger to others in the vehicle. They can hit and injure or kill those who are buckled.

Friday, Jan 11 at 11:23 AM Family Friend wrote ...

Okay, some of the facts aren't right. Mica is a SHE not a HE. And Morgan was Mica's daughter!

Friday, Jan 11 at 11:13 AM tl wrote ...

We don't know if the little girl was buckled in and undid her seatbelt for whatever reason. My hometown lost a 9 year old last year because she did exactly that. In the split second that she undid the belt, the accident happened and she was killed. It was not because of any nefligence on the parents part. Her mother has to live with this everday as will this poor gentleman. Instead of blaming him, maybe those people should find out the real story before judging.

Unknown, I don't see where it says that the adult was wearing a seatbelt, it states that the 3 yr old was buckled in..terrible that this lesson had to be so brutal! My heart goes out to him as well as the rest of her family.

Friday, Jan 11 at 10:52 AM another parent wrote ...

Let's not be so quick to judge the parent. I know that I have my kids buckle but sometimes I'll catch them unbuckling to reach something or readjust. We weren't in the vehicle and don't know the circumstances. Isn't it bad enough that this poor parent has to question his actions everyday without others pointing fingers.

Friday, Jan 11 at 9:05 AM Unknown from Oskaloosa wrote ...

How unbelievably sad, I feel so bad for this little girls family. How on earth could the adult be wearing his seat belt and strap his own child in, but not make sure the little girl was buckled in. This tragedy could have been prevented had the adult taken 2 seconds to make sure she was buckled. My heart goes out to her family.

Friday, Jan 11 at 8:45 AM Concerned Parent wrote ...

My heart goes out to the family of this little girl. Let this be another lesson to parents and caregivers. We NEED to have our children in seatbelts. To many young children are dying in accidents because they are not wearing their seatbelt. Thank god the little boy was, or this could have been twice as bad. Let's take the time to secure our children.
