Seems like Iowa City is following its neighboring town. Lets spend money where it is NOT needed. Lets cut back on important issues while the councel gets a pay raise. I am beginning to really dislike this area for the reason of unnessary spending, cutbacks...time to wake up. 40 million bucks---c'mon. Lets get real.

My two kids just started college this year...at a private out of state school. Why? Because it was CHEAPER to go to an exclusive private out of state school than to go to U of I because of the increases in state tuition. Have you noticed that Kirkwood enrollment is exploding while U of I enrollment has dropped? Wonder why? Because Iowa state tuition has priced itself out of the market. Go ahead..waste $40 million on this boondoggle. My kids and my money have gone elsewhere.

Ah! What the heck it's only $40 million. They just spent $850,000 just to make an employee go away. You must remember the the U of Iowa is a place of higher learning. Hey Mr.Barta, hows that Big Ten Network money grab situation going? Go MEDIACOM!! Next bright idea that you will probably come up with is to make all roads that surround Kinnick toll roads on gameday.

The $40 million needs to go to HONEST, decent people who are actually in need of a good education. There are plenty of kids in the state who can't afford college but want to go. Instead we recruit the innercity hoods and ALLOW them to plunder and pilfer our great state. All in the name of sport....what a joke ! I lost all interest in Iowa sports after they tried to blame the poor snow plow driver who was just doing his job and Iowa's "star" plulled out in front of the plow and was killed.

Thank you Free Market- Someone gets it!

It should be explained that money for projects like this usually come from donors. Remember the Kinnik remodeling? It does not come from the same budget as the education and research mission. If people are upset, it should be due to the fact that donors are willing to finance sports facilities rather than classrooms and research labs.

40 Million to renovate a 20 year old building that cost 20 million originally, just so some people can have luxury suites and a high speed elevator? I like Hawkeye sports but this is just plain dumb. I can think of a lot better things that eastern Iowa could spend the 40 million on.

People should wake up, all that money will come from ALL the parking that the "Athletic Dept." own. Therefore everyone that HAS to pay big bucks to be able park and work at the UIHC will bear most of the cost's, they will just raise the rate's like they do anytime they want more money. They own ALL the parking around and anywhere near the UIHC campus. Its not about learning or teaching, its about greed and partying. What happened to the learning aspect. UIHC is the same way, MONEY...

Most people look at how we can support everyone else and have no personal responsibility. This is about athletics and when people realize FOOTBALL and BASKETBALL support most athletic departments and college is not for everyone that wants to play just because they want to, that is what high school is for. If local governments cannot run like a business and cut wasteful spending then sacrifices have to be made. Don't get mad at athletics for govt incompetence.

One way to recruit good players to fill a college arena, is to have one that they are proud to played in. CHA is very outdated. As an alum, (in response to UI student),I received an outstanding educational opportunity at the UofI, what I did with the opportunity was my choice. My actions in college determined my outcome. Stop blaming the college for kids going to the bars, the students are adults and make choices. Let them reap what they sow...don't you "suppose".

Maybe UI should put the $40 million into the recruiting budget instead. I don't think Carver is the problem this year.

Iowa Athletics supports the University of Iowa. Without football and basketball Iowa would not be the great university it is today. This has nothing to do with the library, this is purely a business decision. The $40 million they are going to spend on the arena will be a small drop in the bucket compared to what they will receive back in sponsorships, concessions, tickets, etc. Guess where that money will go? Back into the university. Back to assist its educational mission.

I'm pretty sure the University loses money on events at Carver anyway, but I spose it might draw attention to sports other than football? (Doubtful, but maybe?) I mean, what else can they do? I don't know if you've ever been on campus after about 5 PM but the University of Iowa is definitely NOT about education. It's about a clout carrying degree awarded after 4-7 years of nightly binge drinking with the occasional daytime visit to a classroom building.

Does anyone remember reading an article about the Cedar Rapids Library having there budget cut 340,000 dollars? Something tells me IC doesn't have 40 million dollars to spend on this. So if the state can't spare 340k on for a city library why would they spend 40 million on a stadium?
Thursday, Jan 10 at 10:38 AM Johnny wrote ...
These people are getting paid way to much to sit around and keep thinking of ways to spend money. The university must furnish them with a gas card also one for groceries and housing . Lets concentrate on education for awhile all we are supporting is a select few& most of them are getting in trouble. Its time to say no we cant afford all this stuff!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thursday, Jan 10 at 10:29 AM mad herkie wrote ...
We should take about 200 acers of the farmland outside of IC and build a new stadium.Easy access from the interstate and better parking. When it takes 15 min to walk from the far parking lot at Carver to watch wrestling something needs to be done.the cost of remodeling out weigh the cost of a new building. Maybe combine it with a Pro football team to offset the cost.
Thursday, Jan 10 at 10:29 AM Anonymous wrote ...
The University of Iowa doesn't set their tuition, that is done by the board of regents. So using this 40 mill on education won't lower the tuition cost. Besides Iowa has the lowest tuition cost in the Big Ten.

That is crazy to spend that amount of money on a building that is perfectly fine when NOBODY goes to the games any way! The kids keep getting into trouble they hardly compete at the Big 10 level, but we spend the money on them. Why not spend it on kids that want to go to school and are good for the University?
Thursday, Jan 10 at 10:19 AM Anonymous wrote ...
I dont know how many of you have been to other big 10 arenas but Carver sucks and something needs to be done or you will be battling for the basement for years to come. Look to the north, Wisconsin has a beautiful arena huge fan support and successful teams

Maybe that money should goto education. What happend to that idea? Maybe then it wouldn't cost so much for students to goto school there.

Why don't they build a NEW arena? And a new football stadium? Right next to the county jail? That way the UI student athletes can walk to practice and games on their "work release" programs.

People are loosing their houses, can't afford gas for their cars but we can spend this on a perfictly good building. Whats wrong with picture?

Ok, shouldn't a new BB arena cost that if not lower? No one is showing up anymore as it is..why add or redesign?? MAYBE, if we could following the team closer we might go to a game..thanks Big 10, U of I, and MediaCom.
