OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - The mall remains closed today, as authorities continue to investigate the shooting and what may have prompted it.
A southwest Iowa man is among the eight people who were killed by a shooter Wednesday at the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Nebraska. John McDonald, 65, of Council Bluffs was a customer who died in a store before emergency crews arrived. That's according to what his son-in-law, Joe Shehan, told the World-Herald.
Police believe that the 19-year-old who opened fire in a Nebraska shopping mall Wednesday had stolen the assault rifle he used from his stepfather's home. They say the weapon was an AK-47. Omaha police say the 19-year-old who carried out the killings may have smuggled the gun into the mall underneath some clothing.
Police Chief Thomas Warren says surveillance video shows the gunman apparently ''concealing something balled up in a hooded sweat shirt.''
Shoppers and employees in the mall ran in terror, and hid in dressing rooms and offices, as the shooter sprayed the third floor of the Von Maur store with gunfire.
Police say the eight people he killed included six employees and two customers. Five more people were wounded, including one man who remains hospitalized in critical condition. One panicked shopper cut his face when he ran into a clothing rack.
They say Hawkins apparently chose his victims at random.
Video surveillance shows him entering the store on the second level. He then took the elevator to the third floor and started firing immediately after he got off the elevator. He then went to the customer service area, shot several more people, and then killed himself.
The shooting was over by the time officers arrived on the scene.
Police have identified the gunman as Robert Hawkins. He's described as a troubled young man. Hawkins was either kicked out of his parents' home or left on his own some time ago, and moved in with a couple whose sons were friends with him. He had recently split with his girlfriend and had been fired from his job at McDonald's.
In a suicide note, he wrote that he was ``sorry for everything,'' adding, quote, ``Now I'll be famous.''

In the last decade, there has been so much emphasis put on issues like "Oh, don't let kids watch violent TV, or they'll become violent." Funny how 15 years ago, when I was in school, teenage shootings weren't regular news stories like they are now!

And quit blaming guns! Take full responsibility for letting these maniacs to run loose like stray dogs lavished with such preferential treatment.

Quit blaming the department store or any other business for this! If this psycho would have been identified and put away *in the first place,* we would not have this terrible public tragedy.

I think what's really sad is people like this lunatic get the publicity they are looking for. Why is it necessary to show this kid's name and picture. How does that really help the situation?

My thoughts and prayers are with all the families. It is sad to see our children changing in such a way that violence is the first thing that comes to mind. I feel that if our teens are that stressed, that we as parents need to listen more.

In response to Tilly. Your accusation against the Von Maur employee's was uncalled for. Maybe YOU need to remember that people working in the fashion industry aren't all about clothes and their appearance. Have a heart.

I hardly think what the employees at Von Maur are asked to wear, had anything to do with this awful event. What an stupid remark. It seems to me that the employees really took charge of the situation.

What is causing these problems is that we have taken God out of our country, our of our schools, out of our court systems and virtually out of our lives and this is what we are left with

I feel that this is ridiculus. Teenagers who are this emotionaly upset should get some help. WE all have stressful lives. You just learn to deal with it. And "now i'll be famous"? are you kidding me?? this boy killed eight people! That is really sad.

I find it astonishing what our world is coming to. It's bad enough that we have older adults that are killing people but now it has practically become the norm for teenagers to go on killing sprees. What has changed over the years to evolve to this

Keep these guys out of the news in the future. Many seek fame after death as a result of their actions. Unfortunately, this is becoming a social norm for psycos. Nothing can be done to stop this, so we need to stop making heros out of these guys.

Maybe now VonMaur will realize that in an emergency it doesn't matter what their employees are wearing.....there are more important things to worry about.

My thoughts and prayers go to the employees and shopper's families. Having worked for VonMaur at one time, I know that this family oriented company is sincere in their regret for this unfortunate event. Prayer and condolences to everyone involved.

That is really sad that someone would do something like that. It's sad that it has gotten to the point where you almost can't go anywhere without wondering if someone will create some violent act against you. I really wish people could just get along
