Diet Request Causes Hunger Strike

By Bree'Ann Hildreth

Polk County (AP) - A Polk County inmate lost his after he says jail officials wouldn't accommodate his vegetarian diet.

Matthew Waddle, 30, says the jail repeatedly dismissed his request for vegetarian meals only.

They told him to just eat around the meat.

Assistant county attorney, Michael O'Mear, says jails only cater to special diets based on religious reasons.

Court documents say the hunger strike, which was slated to begin yesterday, could be brief.
