DES MOINES (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is calling for placing a cap on medical malpractice lawsuits.

Romney spoke at Des Moines University Tuesday. As governor of Massachusetts Romney pushed through a plan that aimed to reduce the number of uninsured people.

Romney says there needs to be federal caps on non-economic and punitive damages related to malpractice. He says they have burdened doctors, hospitals and the entire health care system.

Romney says he'd also encourage states to create health courts with judges experienced in handling medical liability cases.

He says he would ask states to adopt sanctions against lawyers and others who repeatedly file frivolous malpractice claims.
