CEDAR RAPIDS - An attack in Afghanistan last Friday injured two Eastern Iowa soldiers. Another soldier from Western Iowa was killed in a separate action last Monday.

Family members says 21-year-old Kain Schilling of Shueyville and 22-year-old Jonathon Albert of Toddville were flown to an Army hospital in Germany. Both soldiers will recuperate at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington.

The Iowa soldier who died was Army Sergeant Adrian Hike, 26, of Ralston in Carroll County.

The patrol was attacked by militants in the mountains. The attack killed six Americans and wounded 19.

TV9 learned of the injuries to Kain Schilling earlier this week. He also suffered minor wounds in a fight last August. Doctors have told his mother to expect about a six month recovery period.

Jonathon Albert was a friend of Schilling's and also injured in the same battle. His mother told TV9 she expects her son to arrived at the army hospital in Washington by the end of the week.

Michelle Albert said she spoke with Lori Sebetka, the Shueyville soldier's mother, for the first time Tuesday. Albert said the conversation reassured her because Sebetka "was a nurse and was very helpful in talking about the injuries. She (Sebetka) reassured me that Bagram (Afghanistan) was a very good hospital."

Albert was a 2004 graduate of Linn-Mar High School in Marion. Counselors there remembered him as an inquisitive student who eventually found an interest in the building trades program at the school.
