Hiawatha Teen Leads Police on High Speed Chase

By Becky Ogann

LINN/BENTON COUNTY - A Hiawatha teen is not only in trouble with his mom, but now in trouble with the law.

The Linn County sheriff's says the 15-year-old stole the car from his mom's home and was found speeding along Highway 30 in eastern Benton County on Friday.

When a sheriff's deputy pulled the vehicle over, the suspect took off at speeds exceeding 120 mph.

Benton County officials stopped him minutes later at the Highway 218 / Vinton corner with stop sticks. The vehicle spun out and came to a stop at the sholder of the road.

The teen faces a list of charges: operation without owner's consent, failure to yield to an emergency vehicle, speeding, no Iowa driver's license and improper overtaking on the right.

so, you believe that there is more love to be found in a state-run institution than at home?

I don't think it's no love at home. I think it's society today that is shaping these kids. It's not being able to punish them w/o getting sent to jail yourself. I understand not beating them senseless but ever notice how the kids are getting worse

how do you know he doesnt get much love at home? Yes he was in the wrong and should be punished with possible lockup and never to have his license but its not always the parents fault when they behave like that

Don't blame the parents for this kid's misbehavior. The kid needs to be accountable for his own actions. Parent's can give their children the tools to learn. Then it is up to the kids to apply the tools.

It's not love at home thats the problem, it's not teaching your kids right from wrong. Where was this boys mother?! Are parents going to have to start locking their car keys away at night?
