Obama Won't Wear American Flag Pin

IOWA CITY - Presidential Candidate Barack Obama is trying to change political fashion. He gave a speech in Iowa City Wednesday and he wasn't wearing an American flag pin.

Those pins have become synonymous with politicians since 9-11.

Obama says he doesn't like how the pin has come to represent patriotism in America.

The senator told TV-9, "I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest, instead I'm going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great. Hopefully that will be a testimony to my patriotism."

This was Obama's second visit to Johnson County in as many days.

I try to understand but I just can't. Why are some Americans so insistent on deferring to the US flag? Why are other forms of patriotic display so unacceptable? Is it not Unamerican to suppress personal conscience or individuality? I think even some conservative Christians are uncomfortable with how close this flag worship comes to breaking the First Commandment.

"Obama is a muslim and hates America. He will destroy the country from within. He is a menace and anyone voting for him is a traitor to this country." People like you make me sick, ill. I love my county, love my neighbor, love my faith as a Christian. You're an ignorant bigot. I truly, truly feel sorry for you.

If you do not wear the American Flag Pin or have a problem with it, I feel you are not much of an American.............I think this only proves the case.

I was strongly leaning toward Obama, even compared him to JFK, but not now. After learning his lame excuse for not wearing the flag pin in his lapel anything he says hereafter is suspect. I make no apologies for distrusting him. I thank the press for having the fortitude to print his reply.

I really love to read comments posted by people ignorant of other cultures. The only Muslims anyone need be afraid are those of Radical Islam. They are the only real terrorist threat to America. I cannot justify my not voting for someone based upon their religious bleiefs. To me, that is just as bad as the racism previous to the Civil Rights movement. Religion of a candidate should not matter in a country that seperates Church and State. If he were running for Pope, I see a problem.

The senator should not have taken off the pin of our American Flag. It is a symbol of respect for America and the men and women who have defended our Country. He might not want to put his hand on the Bible (I guess that is his right) but the American Flag is another story. I would not vote for anyone who did not honor the American Flag. I think America should take a second look at the Senator and his so-called principals. I personally find him offensive to America and Americans.
