Iowa City School Board Picks New President
IOWA CITY, Iowa – Sally Hoelscher is the new Iowa City school board president.
Her fellow board members elected her Tuesday night on a 4-3 vote over Tuyet Dorau. Voting for her were Marla Swesey, Jeff McGinness, Brian Kirschling and Hoelscher.
Swesey had been board president and nominated Hoelscher. Swesey was picked as vice president on a 4-3 vote with the same members supporting her as Hoelscher and also over Dorau.
Dorau, Patti Fields and Chris Lynch voted for Dorau for both spots.
There was no discussion among board members about their votes.
Tuesday night was the first meeting since the school board election earlier this month. Dorau was re-elected and Kirschling and Lynch took seats on the board, replacing Karla Cook and Sarah Swisher.
Also at the meeting, McGinness was picked as the board’s representative to the Iowa Association of School Board's Delegate Assembly. A judicial panel has recommended he lose his law license for six months for fabricating a legal document and lying about it, and some people have called on him to resign from the school board.
McGinness has refused to comment on the matter.
