ATF Sting Ensnares Des Moines Men in Robbery Plot
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Federal investigators say five Des Moines men who believed they were ready to execute a high-stakes drug robbery were arrested after a monthslong sting by undercover agents.
The men were arrested last week in a Hy-Vee parking lot, shortly before they believed they were going to rob a house where 24 pounds of cocaine was stored.
A criminal complaint says the men were armed with pistols, zip ties, bear mace and a knife. In reality, the plot was a fiction created by an undercover Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agent, who pushed the men to carry it out.
The complaint says one suspect was involved in prior burglaries and home invasions. Agents tracked the group for months as members allegedly sold marijuana and firearms.
The men will make court appearances Thursday
