IOWA CITY - States across the nation unite to push a program targeted at improving heart health.
Today, Iowa's Lieutenant Governor Patty Judge announces how this effort will help Iowans take hold of improving their heart health.
93-hundred Iowans died from heart disease last year alone.
With a family history of cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure, Denise Schmitz knew she needed to alter her lifestyle.
"It was difficult to get over that hump of working out next to a bunch of young, thin, tan women but you know you just have to get over it and go," said Schmitz.
That approach to improving personal health is exactly what Lieutenant Governor Patty Judge wants more Iowans to do.
"The goal should be to eat a healthy diet, exercise regularly, and if you're like me, to drop a few pounds," said Lt. Governor Judge.
More than 67 percent of all adult Iowans are overweight. Obesity is one of six major risk factors for cardiovascular disease which is the number one killer of Iowa women and men.
"All you have to do is walk down the street and see we are heavier and less physically fit," said Lt. Governor Judge.
That's why Lt. Governor introduced this new, 12-week, web-based program to encourage Iowans to take hold of their health.
"It's a simple, free way to start down the path towards a healthier you," said Lt. Governor Judge.
A similar journey Schmitz started some time ago on her own.
For her, the results have been life-changing.
"It's just good to put myself first at some point in my life and really be a better parent and better example for my kids as a result," said Schmitz.
An outcome that's proof change can happen.
This new program called the Lieutenant Governors' Challenge helps you plan, track and gain rewards from improved nutrition and fitness choices.
You can even earn a medal for improving your health.
