Branstad Formally Enters Race for Iowa Governor

By Becky Ogann

DES MOINES (AP) - Former Gov. Terry Branstad has officially entered the race for the Republican nomination for governor, vowing to cut state spending by 15 percent while putting a new focus on the state's schools.

Branstad formally entered the race on Tuesday after exploring the potential of seeking a return to office for months. He first will face a Republican primary, with three other candidates who are seeking the GOP nomination to challenge Democratic incumbent Gov. Chet Culver.

Sioux City businessman Bob Vander Plaats, and state Reps. Chris Rants and Rod Roberts also are seeking the GOP nomination.

Branstad served four terms as governor before leaving office in 1998.
