Iowa AG Seeks Charity Fundraising Tracking System

By Becky Ogann

DES MOINES (AP) - Iowa's attorney general is drafting legislation that would require thousands of Iowa charities to disclose how much of the money they raise actually benefits their causes.

Advocates say creating an online financial disclosure system would prevent Iowans from being duped into donating to organizations that spend as little as 1 percent of what they raise on a charitable purpose.

But charities have opposed similar efforts in the past and may do so again. The groups would have to pay an annual registration fee.

Planned Parenthood of the Heartland lobbyist Kyle Carlson says the system would take money from charities for a program that's not needed.

Professional fundraisers already must disclose some financial information, but not the charities they serve.
