Christie Vilsack Says No to Senate Run

By Becky Ogann

DES MOINES (AP) - Former Iowa first lady Christie Vilsack says she's decided not to seek the Democratic nomination to run against Republican U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley.

Vilsack released a statement Monday morning saying she was "flattered and humbled" by calls from Democrats and others for her to run for Senate in 2010. She says she considered entering the race but decided she would continue public service in other ways, such as her efforts with a group that works to reduce unwanted pregnancies.

Vilsack is the wife of Tom Vilsack, a two-term Iowa governor who is now U.S. Agriculture secretary.

Two former state legislators, Bob Krause and Tom Fiegen, say they'll seek the Democratic party's nomination, and Des Moines lawyer Roxanne Conlin says she'll probably join the race.
