Culver's Pay to be Cut 10 Percent Afterall

By Becky Ogann

DES MOINES (AP) - Gov. Chet Culver has changed course and will take a 10 percent pay cut as previously announced.

Culver said earlier this month he would reduce his $130,000 annual salary to match the amount he cut state spending. At the time, the governor's staff said the pay cut would total $13,000.

But the proposed budget released Wednesday had Culver's pay cut by $7,000, or 5.4 percent. Spokesman Phil Roeder said a decision was made that the 10 percent reduction would not be applied to wages already paid, but apply to the balance of the fiscal year.

On Thursday, Culver chief of staff John Frew issued a statement saying he erred in handling the governor's pay in the same manner as the department heads. He said the governor will take a 10 percent cut on his entire annual salary this year.
