CEDAR RAPIDS - Many Cedar Rapids business leaders saw see the three candidates for mayor in action on Monday.
The latest debate took place in front of hundreds of downtown rotary club members and others. And like many such meetings leading up to the November 3rd election, each candidate staked out familiar positions while answering questions.
As a current member of the council, Brian Fagan defended the decisions and processes involved in flood recovery. One time house majority leader Ron Corbett promised swifter action and less red tape.
And 12-time council or mayoral candidate P.T. Larson again pledged to work full time in the part time position. But all three answered this same question, what's a top priority if elected?
"If we don't turn our tax base around and start growing, what kind of discussions are we going to have in this community the next five-ten years, what services to cut?" said Ron Corbett.
Candidate P.T. Larson put public safety issues first and reminded the crowd he proposed the idea of police sub-stations in a run for mayor 20 years ago.
"We had a walk-by murder in this community June of this year, this is simply inexcusable," said P.T. Larson.
Rather than a one-two-three list of "to do" items, Council member Fagan said a top priority for him would be to get different groups working together in the same direction.
"We are strongest when we work together... I think that's the message that has to be sent, as we come together, it's about partnerships for neighborhoods, for economic development, but also just as a community," said Brian Fagan.
