Branstad Plans Speech at Des Moines University

By Becky Ogann

DES MOINES (AP) - Former Gov. Terry Branstad has scheduled a closed-door speech to students and staff at Des Moines University on Friday, fueling speculation that he'll say something about his plans for a political comeback.

Jeff Boeyink, hired this week to head a panel considering whether Branstad should run for governor, wouldn't say Wednesday what Branstad will talk about or whether he'll announce his candidacy for the Republican nomination.

Whatever he says at the speech, Branstad has been leaving the impression that he'll run for the office he held for 16 years. The clearest moves were establishing the exploratory committee and hiring Boeyink, who stepped down as executive director of the Iowa Republican Party to take the position.

Since leaving office, Branstad has worked as president of Des Moines University.
