Culver Sets Date to Fill Taylor's Seat

By Daren Sukhram

DES MOINES (AP) - Gov. Chet Culver has scheduled a special election Nov. 24 to fill the seat of a Cedar Rapids legislator who announced earlier this week that he would resign.

The election in House District 33 will pick a replacement for Democratic Rep. Dick Taylor, who announced his resignation Monday.

The 78-year-old Taylor, has held the seat since 2000.

Democrats have a 56-44 margin in the House, and the latest special election will present a challenge for Republicans seeking to cut into that margin. Democrats consider the district one of the 10 most Democratic-leaning districts in the state.

State election records show President Barack Obama got 71 percent of the vote in the district in 2008.

Both parties will hold special conventions to pick their candidates.
