Culver Mulls Early Retirment to Help 2010 Budget

By Daren Sukhram

DES MOINES (AP) - Gov. Chet Culver is considering an early-retirement package for older workers as a way to trim state payroll costs next year.

The Des Moines Register says in a copyright story on Monday that the package would allow older workers to retire but continue receiving at least a portion of their state-paid health insurance premiums.

Culver's chief of staff, John Frew, says it's one of several options the governor expects to offer in the 2010 legislative session to fill a projected $900 million projected shortfall for the budget year beginning in July.

According to the Iowa Department of Administrative Services, about 2,300 state employees will be eligible for retirement with full benefits in July 2010.
