Iowa House Speaker: Film Effort Could be Suspended

By Becky Ogann

DES MOINES (AP) - A legislative leader says lawmakers might suspend Iowa's troubled film promotion operation for up to a year while they figure out how to deal with questionable spending and accounting procedures.

In an interview Tuesday with The Associated Press, House Speaker Pat Murphy acknowledged the attorney general's decision to open a criminal investigation into the Iowa Film Office complicates the issue. Murphy says lawmakers may want to wait until legal issues are settled before delving into the issues revolving around the film office and tax credits issued to filmmakers.

Murphy says one idea would be to suspend film promotion tax breaks for a year, then reopen the office with appropriate staffing and regulations.
