Culver Hires New Chief of Staff, Strategist

By Becky Ogann

DES MOINES (AP) - Gov. Chet Culver has hired a new chief of staff.

Culver named John Frew as his chief of staff on Thursday. Frew will begin his new duties Sept. 28.

Frew is a former campaign manager for U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin and worked for Culver's father, U.S. Sen. John Culver.

Frew graduated from the University of Iowa and the Creighton University School of Law. He has practiced law in Denver and also been involved in several major sporting venues, events and attractions.

Culver's previous chief of staff, Charles Krogmeier, was named director of the Iowa Department of Human Services in April.

Culver also named Teresa Vilmain as a senior strategist for his campaign. He has not formally announced his intentions, but Culver has left little doubt he will seek another term.
