Iowa Democrats May Have to Drop Key Issues

By Aaron Hepker

DES MOINES (AP) - Iowa lawmakers again say they are pushing toward adjournment, but as in previous weeks, a number of hurdles stand in their way.

Senate Majority Leader Michael Gronstal says Democrats want to adjourn, but doing so could mean leaders must give up on several issues.

Leaders have been frustrated in the House, where moderate lawmakers mostly from rural areas have blocked action on labor-backed bills and an income tax overhaul. Legislators also haven't taken action of a $750 million bonding
bill backed by Gov. Chet Culver to pay for flood recovery and infrastructure repairs.

Further complicating adjournment efforts is President Barack Obama's trip Wednesday to Newton, an event that will draw many Democratic legislators from the Statehouse.
