Sleep, Drink and Be Wary!

The week between Christmas and New Years can undo our pre-holiday efforts at healthy eating and not gaining weight. Follow these suggestions and celebrate the New Year feeling great!

Sleep! If you're sleep deprived, now is the time to catch up. Not enough rest increases appetite and the extra calories seem to all land in the middle.

Drink! Keep plenty of water and zero-calorie beverages around and drink them. Winter weather can be dehydrating. Lots of times people think they're hungry when they really need water.

Be Wary! Pack a snack whenever you go out. You may not eat it, but it can help stay away from impulse food purchases at the mall or movie theater. Hy-Vee dietitian, Judy Fitzgibbons will show you how to use Hy-Vee's NuVal nutrition scoring system to quickly spot snacks to put in your pocket.

Use this guideline:
NuVal 30 and up: take it! It's anytime snack.
NuVal 20 – 29: some nutritional value here. It's a sometimes snack
NuVal less than 20: that's fun food. You've had enough of that. Put it back.

Carry: Clementine oranges, cheese sticks, 100 calorie cracker packets, Lara or Kind bars.

Fill your plate with veggies whenever/wherever you eat. At least half. Fills you up and dilutes high fat, high sodium leftovers and party foods.
