Four Additional H1N1 Deaths Confirmed in IowaIowa Department of Public Health
DES MOINES - The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) has reported four additional 2009 H1N1influenza-related deaths in Iowa. The victims are identified as an adult in Dubuque County, an adult in Polk County, an adult in Mills County, and an adult in Monona County. All but one individual had medical conditions that increased the risk of complications.
To date, Iowa has reported 11 confirmed H1N1 deaths in Iowa, including ten adults and one child. “While school-age children have been most affected by the H1N1 virus over the past several weeks, surveillance is starting to show an increase in adult illness,” said IDPH Medical Director, Dr. Patricia Quinlisk. “With H1N1 vaccine continuing to be allocated to states on a staggered basis, many adults are not yet in the priority group targeted for vaccination. Until more vaccine becomes available, it’s important for all Iowans to continue to take personal action to prevent the spread of illness. These steps include cleaning your hands frequently; covering your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or your sleeve; and containing germs by staying home when ill. Symptoms of H1N1 influenza are similar to seasonal influenza and include a fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.
