June 13, 2008: Hasn't this been a week of the floods... I am getting ready to go home and pass out as I write this. I am absolutely amazed at how the volunteers have responded to the efforts. I am also impressed at how the rescuers have responded to the people trapped.
I do realize, though, that many of those trapped by the floods in Cedar Rapids are trapped there by their own will. I have talked to many of those rescued from the flooded homes who said they weren't expecting it to get that bad, or they couldn't leave without their pets.
It's hard to tell someone who considers their pet to be part of the family, that they have to leave. But thats exactly the case. The one question I have yet to ask someone as they were rescued is, "How do you tell the rescuers that you wanted to put their lives at risk to save you, just because you didn't want to leave?"
If there are more rescues I might sneak that question in.
If you have been rescued, tell me how you would respond. I'm curious.

I'm with you, Justin. Thank you for saying this! It's irresponsible for anyone to willingly put another person's life in danger and that is exactly what those who chose to stay, for whatever reason, have done. Yes, this was an unprecedented flood, but at least 2-3 days before it hit CR, it hit Cedar Falls and Waterloo. Did they think that water was going to evaporate before it hit CR? If nothing else, we all knew that no one knew just how bad it would get. People are more important than animals.

you are correct sir! i suppose if the same people built their house on the inside edge of an active volcano they would be shocked when their pets and stamp collections were vaporized on a yearly basis. it's a tragedy but noone can say they didn't see it coming! that said, good luck to everyone affected, godspeed.
