Workers Turned in Stolen Cans for Cash

  • Photo
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A Coralville man is accused of turning in thousands of stolen cans to collect the redemption refund.

According to a criminal complaint, Victor Batie, 55, of Coralville, turned in 17 bags of cans in January 2009, totaling approximately 4,080 cans, at the Can Shed in Iowa City. Batie was working there as a temporary worker.

Surveillance cameras showed Batie and a coworker set the bags of cans outside the store. Batie would then collect the bags to turn them in to the store to collect the refund. The complaints claim Batie and the coworker collected $421.50 in the scam.

Batie is charged with 4th degree theft and tampering with records. The other man who worked at the Can Shed had been charged with the same counts but those charges were dismissed, according to Iowa Courts Online.
