WATERLOO, Iowa - A 22-year-old Waterloo man is dead following an officer involved shooting at the 500 Block of Riehl Street early Sunday morning.
A release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety said police received an emergency call that shots had been fired at a bar, New World Lounge II, 504 Riehl Street at 1:42 a.m. Sunday. When Officer Kyle Law, who was in the area, arrived on scene, the release said he found Derrick Ambrose Jr. pointing a gun at a crowd of people and ordered him to drop his weapon. Ambrose then ran from the area, leading to a foot chase.
The report said that, at some point during the chase, Ambrose stepped out from behind a tree and Officer Law shot him in the head on the 500 block of Riehl Street. The man died on scene.
Law is a three-year veteran of the Waterloo Police Department and has been placed on administrative leave, per agency policy, pending the outcome of the investigation.
The incident remains under investigation by the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, and an autopsy is expected to be performed on Monday.
