CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Cedar Rapids police are warning residents about a potential scam involving suspects claiming to represent MidAmerican Energy.
According to police, on Saturday, Oct. 19, a local resident was called by someone claiming to work for MidAmerican. The caller initially said the resident was behind on his bill, but later said there was a gas leak. The resident was told if he didn't immediately pay his bill, MidAmerican could not fix the leak.
Police said the resident made an initial payment through a local retailer with a Green Dot Moneypak prepaid card, but was stopped from making a second payment by a family member.
Scams like this are not new, police said, and MidAmerican officials are working with law enforcement across the state to help educate customers about the scam.
