Police: Man Points Gun at Iowa City Store Employees

IOWA CITY, Iowa - A 38-year-old Batavia man faces a robbery charge after police said he pointed a gun at employees of an Iowa City discount store confronting him about shoplifting.

Investigators said Randall E. Mairet pointed a gun at employees of Paul's Discount, 424 Highway 1 just after 8 p.m. Saturday. Mairet fled the store, but officers found him in a parking lot a few blocks away and took him into custody without incident, said Iowa City Police Sgt. David Droll. A loaded firearm and knife were recovered, Droll said.

While there were was some initial confusion from people inside the store, Droll said investigators found no evidence shots were fired.

There were no injuries.

Mairet was taken to the Johnson County Jail and additional charges are pending, Droll said.
