DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say a Des Moines resident wasn't injured in an exchange of gunshots with an intruder who broke into his home.

The Des Moines Register says the 56-year-old man told officers that he was awakened around 2 a.m. Sunday by crashing sounds inside his trailer. The resident says he grabbed a shotgun he keeps near his bed and walked toward his living room.

The resident told police that he saw someone standing in the living room and shouted a challenge. That person crouched down and fired three or four handgun shots at the resident, who loosed one blast from his shotgun.

The intruder then ran out a door and escaped. No arrest has been reported.
